How do I Join the Oregon Debate and Speech Team?
Every U of O student can participate and no prior experience is necessary. There are 2 steps to becoming a team member:
1- Contact the coaching staff at uodebate@gmail.com.
You can also visit the Debate and Speech office, located in Suite #2 in the basement of the UO Annex on the corner of 12th and Kincaid behind the university bookstore.
2 – Attend team practice and/or enroll in Honors College HC399. The dual class and practice meets Monday in the upstairs of the Honors College at 6:00PM. Enrollment in HC 399 is not required, but attending HC399 is mandatory for all team members, regardless of their enrollment status.
What events can I do?
UO Forensics supports parliamentary and policy debate and speech events. If you are not familiar with competitive forensics, more can be learned about these activities by following the links below.
How often does the team travel and how much work will I have to do?
UO Debate & Speech Guidelines for Travel Eligibility
Our team welcomes students with all different levels of commitment, however there are a limited number of travel slots available. New members who meet the minimum requirements typically travel once or twice per term. Additional travel opportunities exist for student who demonstrate exception skill and work-ethic.
The HC399 course requirements are distinct from the requirements for travel eligibility.
Hello, I am a rising senior at Millard West High School in Omaha, Nebraska. I have found competitive speech to be my haven, a world away from the common stresses of high school and I would love to continue this art form at the collegiate level. Last month I qualified in two events at state, earning fifth in entertainment speaking. I am currently preparing for Catholic Nationals held in Albany, New York next week. I attended Duck Days last year and I have my heart set on attending the University of Oregon while majoring in Sports Marketing. I researched the Ducks Forensics team and it looks perfect, and I was wondering if I could get a little more information on the tournaments, practice, and committment desired to be a part of this tremendous team. In my high school, debate and forensics are separate teams, but it sounds like I would need to compete in both debate and speech. Is this correct, or can I just compete in the forensic events?
